First Völkl Split & Freeride Camp
Splitboarding at Austria's highest mountain and chilling at the Luxury Chalets.
From March 14 to 16, 2014 the first Völkl Split & Freeride Camp with freeride world champion Aline Bock
took place. The crew was lodged at the luxury chalets of the 4****s Gradonna Mountain Resort in Kals
in Eastern Tyrol. With a 3000 sq m spa temple, a heated outdoor pool, different saunas, steam baths and probably the worlds largest breakfast and dinner buffet, this was the perfect place to chill out after challenging splitboard missions during the day.
All attendees had the chance to test the newest equipment from the partners Marker, Deeluxe and Ortovox. Also we brought some of our brand new 14/15 Untrac splitboards.
After some interesting words from Aline who talked about her life as a professional freerider, the crew set up their Untrac splitboards and got used to its handling.
With Martin Seiler and Peter Walchhofer there also have been two Völkl riders among the camper.
On day 1 the Kalser mountain guides leaded the group to the Roten Kogel peak on 2.762 meter a.s.l.
Starting with a mellow ascent on the splitboard the terrain got steeper and steeper with every kick turn. In the end the peak was only accessible by feet with the board fixed at the backpack.
While standing on top and enjoying the incredible panorama on more than sixty peaks around 3.000 meter a.s.l. everyone was more or less speechless cause it felt like so close to heaven.
The reward for the exhausting way up was a nice ride down far away from mass tourism. There have been so much individual lines from steep gullies with rocks through wide open pow fields. In the end everyone arrived at the hotel with a big smile on his face.
Right before the evening dinner some workshops about avalanche awareness and risk management took place which ended up in an interesting group discussion about everyones experiences on the mountain.
Day 2 was more or less a bad weather day, so the crew decided to do an easy hike through the forest heading to the Lesachriegel hut at 2.134 meter a.s.l..
After a traditional Tyrolean snack the crew split up in several teams to do some avalanche burial exercises. Using the avalanche transceiver, correct probing and shoveling … and always racing against the clock.
The way down was a fun run through the forest with some nice pillows and easy jumps.
